What's new in NetOp School 3.0?

What is new in NetOp School 3.0?
NetOp School 3.0 has been updated to include several important new features. The program now offers cutting-edge application and Internet control like nobody else in the marketplace. For an overview of the new and modified features, see below. For a full list of features, go to “features and benefits”.

Primary new functions

Application control - allow/deny use of certain applications on student computers. Introducing Soft-Blocking: Currently open windows of an application that is blocked, will be hidden and re-opened when the application blocking is released.

Internet connection control – allow/deny certain URL, etc. on student computers.

Record and replay – prepare the lessons by recording specific actions on the teacher’s computer. Add microphone sound. Distribute to students for local replay or demonstrate the pre-recorded instructions. Record students’ screen activity during a monitor or remote control session.

Lesson plans – dynamic lesson plans. Teachers can combine their presentations with pre-configured NetOp School actions like Demonstrate [Media file]. A double-click on the Action Link and the predefined action is executed.

Send message – send a message to selected users in rich text format containing e.g. links to web sites.

Support for multi-monitor environments – broadcast only a specific monitor in a multi-monitor environment.

Demonstrate a selected desktop area – broadcast only part of the desktop of your choice.

Demonstrate media files – zoom – 50%, 200% or full screen on Student and Teacher. To prevent network overload while showing large video clips a teacher may prefer local playback on student computers instead of playing from a shared location. In this case the media file is automatically distributed if not already residing on the student computer.

Multiple chats – Word wrap in Text Chat, Customize font in Text Chat, etc. Let more students chat in different groups simultaneously. Teacher can follow and join any group.

Web updates – all modules can now be updated automatically from the web.

Windows Server 2003 – support for this platform added (32 bit).

Improved Teacher and Student functionality - as listed below:

Interface

Teacher
Re-organized interface – fewer clicks to more functions. New buttons with drop-down menus offers quicker access to the full set of features from the Teacher toolbar. Quicker access to Option changes.

New naming and organization of functions – Remote Control and Monitor under Control. File Manager, Distribute and Collect Files under Files. Chat, AudioChat and Send Message under Communicate. Mosaic View changed to Thumbnail View. Student Group View changed to Class Setup View.

Floating desktop toolbar – handle all teaching operations directly from your desktop with the dockable toolbar.

Easy customization of toolbars – show or hide text for buttons. Re-arrange buttons. Show or hide buttons.

Student
New tab layout – General Tab (Status, Name, Connection method), Class Tab (list of classroom participants), Messages Tab (list of received messages), Recordings Tab (collection of recordings for local replay).

Security

Connection Password (optional) – prevents unauthorized use of Teacher module (e.g. Trial version) to abuse a Student module by enabling authentication of Teacher–Student connections via a general password on Student and Teacher.

Functionality in general

Monitor toolbox layout – CD control panel type with skip, next and select option.

Media Control toolbox – easy selection and change of movie for continuous playback from a button on the toolbox.

Remote control – double-click on a Student record now starts a remote control session from Details and Classroom Views (previously only from Thumbnail (Mosaic) View).

Thumbnail View – the thumbnails can now be arranged freely (floating).

Thumbnail View – view a selected Student group first in the row of thumbnails.

Thumbnail View – background bitmap added. Can be changed like in Classroom View.

IP broadcast list can contain DNS names – for easy configuration of connections on multi-subnet networks DNS names can be used instead of IP addresses.

IP broadcast range – for easy configuration of connections on multi-subnet networks it is now possible to an IP address range instead of having to enter each specific address for multiple student computers.

Marker Utility – a selected tool will now stay selected until deselected.

Marker Utility – new magnifying glass tool to enlarge a certain area of the desktop.

Marker Utility – new text tool for writing on the desktop.

Life belt icon – (Help requested) – now appears also in Classroom View.
Connect to class – will now accept environment variables.

Prompt for login name – a Student module using this identification method will now automatically be connected to a given Teacher Class, showing firsthand the [computer name], later the entered login name. This allows a Teacher user to have immediate control of the Student computer while waiting for login.

Browse for classes – it is now possible for a Student to manually re-browse the network if no teacher modules were available on the time of the initial Browse.

Student deployment – now supports automatic reading of install files from CD when started from inside the Teacher module. If no CD is inserted, the user may insert one and press RETRY, or he/she may press IGNORE and manually point to where the install files are.

Student deployment – now prompts for user credentials if a deployment to a certain Student computer demands specific user rights to fulfill the remote installation.

Student deployment – setup.iss file edited inside the Student Deployment Utility will now accept change to CONFIGURE=0 to enable copying of files e.g. for deployment of configuration files (NDB files).
